Here I will endeavour to explain a little about the 'Person-Centred' approach and how it works in order for you to understand how the sessions unfold.
The Person-Centred approach believes that everyone has the potential to grow and change provided they are given the right conditions for this to happen. As a Person-Centred counsellor my aim is to aid this process by providing the space and environment that facilitates this practice. The issues we cover are chosen by you the client as the very fact that you decide to bring them into the session indicates to me that they are important to you. Nothing will be deemed too small, insignificant or embarrassing to discuss.
Through our continued sessions the hope is that you will discover why you are feeling the way you do and in time have a greater understanding of the impact your feelings are having on you and your life. Sometimes just hearing a thought or feeling being articulated out loud helps to clarify a situation that has seemed complicated and impossible to deal with alone. Together we embark on a voyage of discovery about your true feelings. The aim is that I help you to understand yourself better and in turn come to terms with the events that have brought you here.
Sometimes this process can take some time and in other cases it will be quick to resolve. We will discuss together how many sessions are needed as we go along as there is complete flexibility here. Nothing is cast in stone. Person-centred counselling is tailored to suit the individual client’s wishes and needs so that you feel totally in control of the situation. It is usually a very empowering experience as a client normally leaves with a greater understanding of themselves having developed insights and self awareness that enhances their future by encouraging change. Sometimes our situation does not change but our perception of it does.
I hope this briefly explains how the approach works but if when we meet you have any questions please feel free to ask me.
