It can feel quite daunting when you take that first step to have counselling. It can help ease any reservations you might have if you have a sense of what will happen when you arrive for your initial assessment.
Our initial assessment is not as scary as it sounds; it is an informal meeting to give us both an opportunity to introduce ourselves. It is a chance to find out if you feel comfortable with the approach and to gauge if it is appropriate for you. It also gives us an opening to discuss any worries or anxieties you may have before we start. If we both agree to commence with our work together we will make a commitment to meet on a regular weekly basis at the same time for 50 minutes. Of course if there is a problem occasionally we can re-schedule an appointment.
It is important to choose the counsellor that personally suits you so this session is to establish if counselling is right for you and that you are happy that we can work together. It is important to the therapeutic process that we meet regularly, but obviously breaks for holidays and unforeseen circumstances can be negotiated.
